Vinyl Records

I got a text from Darling.
“Have you still got your old vinyl records?”

I did and I do. They were in the attic.

I  had  thought of taking them to a second hand junk shop but to be honest  I didn’t think they were sellable. They were enjoyed to the maximum and as a result are well worn with quite a few scratches!  But on the other hand I couldn't just throw them away. So there they all were waiting in the attic!

Anyhow... Darling had bought a record player with a usb facility that means you can  turn your old vinyls (and cassette tapes!) into MP3 tracks.

I haven’t actually used that facility yet. Funny thing is that somehow those old songs lose some magic when you convert them to digital. And to be honest if I want a particular song I can buy it on itunes usually....without all the scratches!

But the fun thing has been getting out those old albums. Releasing a multitude of memories. Just in the way we used to handle LPs and singles. Don’t touch the playing part with your fingers. Slide it out of the sleeve. Put it on the turntable, check the speed setting start it revolving, lift the arm and gently place the stylus at the beginning of the grooves....the sound comes to life.....the old favourites start to play.

For me first of all out came Donovan and Bob Dylan.
And then old favourite classical music from my music studying days.

For Darling it was miscellaneous cassette tapes with old radio discussion programmes. Amazing history.

Have you got any old vinyls and cassettes? Do you still have the equipment to play them? Do you play them?

Spring break

Schools are on holiday for the spring break this week.
It is busy  in Hermanus and Stanford with the Whale Festival and church fete, eco exhibition, cooking demonstrations, music, art....etc.
Yesterday evening I popped into Stanford to visit  an art studio on the Stanford Art Stroll. Sara and Val's art work on display. Super stuff! Plus some interesting "rock creatures". Glass of wine and conversation.
This morning I'm off to look at beautiful orchids at the orchid show in Hermanus.
The sun is shining the wind is blowing. It looks like a beautiful day ahead.

Spring weather

Yes today feels like the first day of spring!

Spring cleaning?

Maybe some….but I am still busy with de-cluttering and working on understanding the principles of a  realistic  minimalist lifestyle anyway and the house and garden are being attended to every day…..

So I think I need to concentrate on spring cleaning my mind!
Searching for that illusive time-space continues!

That's what the minimalist lifestyle can be about. Not just about de-cluttering and having fewer physical things around you but  using the time-space to work on projects that bring joy to you and the people in your life.

My mind is feeling cluttered this morning.
I have a lot of chores to do and errands to run firstly and they are jumbled up in my brain at the moment. So step 1 this morning is sit down and write a list……ok  off to do that.

Find your Time-Space!

Starting creative writing should be easy!
It requires:-
  1. A desire to write something (for other people to read).
  2. Something to write about.
  3. A specific kind of self discipline that means you can find a time-space to dedicate to creativity.

In fact any kind of creative activity could be substituted in the above:  creative gardening,  cooking, art work,  woodwork, pottery, needlework, music writing..etc.

So how have I been doing with my creative writing since joining the creative writing group in January?
Actually not as well as I would have liked. I don’t seem to have been able to make that decision to dedicate a time-space to the activity!
I have been on an extended pottering spree! Moving furniture, tidying the garden, decluttering cupboards, sorting out my desk area......

I did go on some wonderful travels a month or so ago. Visiting family around the world. Catching up with loved ones and gathering some added inspiration along the way.  beautiful Botanical Gardens and private gardens, art museums and exhibitions, watercolour paintings, amazing needle work and dolls’ houses, beaches and country cottages, old watermills and windmills, dogs and cats, horses, rabbits and canal boats, ferries and foods and wines......
There is always time to do what we want to do!  At some point we have to make the decision to stop the pottering. We have to let things get cluttered, untidy, disorganised and even a bit neglected!

So am I ready to start writing?
I hope so.

I also hope that you the visitor to this blog have had a wonderful inspiring start to 2014.

Moving now into the rest of the year......

Watch this space!
